At EPS delagente our priority is your well-being and care. We share this information about myths and facts about diabetes:

Myth 1

No one in my family has diabetes, so I won't get the disease

Reality

Having a family member with diabetes increases the risk of developing this disease. However, there is the possibility of having diabetes without your family members suffering from it. Some risk factors are:

  • Being overweight or obese
  • have prediabetes
  • Having a polycystic ovary
  • Gestational diabetes
  • Being over 45 years old

Myth 2

I eat a lot of sugar, so I'm worried about getting diabetes

Reality

Consuming sugar does not cause diabetes, however, excessive consumption of sugary foods and drinks causes overweight and this does increase the risk of diabetes.

Myth 3

I have diabetes, I can't eat sweets

Reality

Sweets are simple sugars and increase the amount of glucose in the blood more than other foods. However, they are not prohibited for people with diabetes; they can consume them as long as they balance it with their diet.

Lifesaving Tips

If you or a family member have diabetes, we recommend these tips to prevent diabetic foot.

The diabetic foot is a complication caused by decreased circulatory flow in the lower extremities, prevents wound healing and increases the risk of prolonged infection.

Follow these recommendations:

  • Wash your feet daily with warm water and neutral soap
  • Do not apply alcohol or cleaning substances such as povidone-iodine (isodine), hydrogen peroxide or thimerosal (merthiolate), as they can cause burns or allergic reactions
  • Dry your feet properly, checking that there is no moisture left between the toes
  • Check that your feet do not present wounds, buried nails or color changes (black nails or signs of a blow)
  • Touch the soles of your feet looking for a foreign body (glass, splinter, nails). If you have decreased vision, ask a family member to help you
  • Touch the tips of your fingers, the sole of the foot and the heel with your hand, verify that you feel the touch
  • For the proper cut of your nails go to the podiatrist, who is the specialist in the care of your feet
  • Use socks without spring and seams
  • Avoid wearing tight or loose shoes, as they can cause blisters
